FAQs
1) When are you leaving?
a. We will be leaving on July 13th or so. We will take a flight to Seattle where we will stay overnight with a contact that we have there. From Seattle we will fly to Singapore and then into Jakarta. From Jakarta, it is about an hour's drive into Sentul, where we are living!
2) Where are you staying?
a. We will be living in a house in Sentul, which is provided by the school. We do not yet have pictures, but we will update as soon as we do.
b. Sentul is about an hour south of Jakarta on the island of Java. The closest city to us is Bogor, which is about 10 minutes out. Check out its geography HERE.
3) What is the school like?
a. Sekolah Pelita Harapan, Sentul is a small school belonging to a larger district that spans throughout Java. It is a private Christian school that has an outstanding reputation for excellence of education and community, which lures parents to bring their children there, Christian or not. This gives us the opportunity to witness to the children in the classroom and out.
b. The school is part of the International Baccalaureate program, which is designed to prepare students for attendance of Ivy League or Oxbridge colleges and universities. Among the features that this provides is a strong emphasis on the arts. As a result, things like drama or music are required of all students to the same level as English and math.
c. SPH, Sentul is a bilingual school, teaching students in both English and Indonesian. This is largely to preserve and honor the Indonesian culture while also giving students a working use of the English language. We are told that we can survive fairly easily without knowing Indonesian, but we are also told that Indonesian is a very easy language to pick up as it has no verb tenses, etc.
